Houston, TX –Yasmin Eleby, a 40-year old woman from Houston has gotten married to… well, herself. Eleby, who is a well-traveled businesswoman, vowed that she would marry herself if she hadn’t found the man of her dreams by the age of 40. And so, for her 40th birthday, she followed through with her promise.

Her wedding ceremony was held just like any other one would. It was held at the Houston Museum of African American Culture, and she had 10 bridesmaids. It was officiated by her sister who is a minister, and her mother even walked her down the aisle. Eleby then performed R. Kelly’s hit song “I Believe I Can Fly,” highlighting the unforgettable line, “Now I know the meaning of true love.”

But can you legally marry yourself?

Actually, no. In all 50 states, a person can not legally marry him or herself, but Eleby says it was a spiritual service.

She comments, “I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support that was shown to me during my celebration of love and life. You are not too old and it’s not too late to try something different, learn a new skill, travel to exciting places, etc. Don’t be afraid to take risks.”

So, will there be a honeymoon?

Actually, yes! Eleby has planned a multi-destination honeymoon with herself that will take her to the Asian countries of Cambodia and Laos. She will also attend a jazz festival in Dubai, UAE.

And then what?

Well, who knows? Maybe all this media attention will help her meet the man of her dreams. And then she can get married all over again!
