Black-Owned Production Company, Run&Shoot Filmworks, Announces New Partnership With American Film Institute’s Silver Theatre and Cultural Center

Color of Conversation Film Series

Silver Spring, MD — Run&Shoot Filmworks, founders and producers of the Martha’s Vineyard African American Festival (MVAAFF), a Black-owned and operated company, announces a new partnership with the American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center: The Color of Conversation Film Series (COC), set to take place June 28 to July 1st at the AFI Silver Theatre, located in downtown in Silver Spring, MD, a vibrant part of the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

In 2003, Run&Shoot Filmworks successfully launched the Martha’s Vineyard African American Festival (MVAAFF). Now in its 16th year, the festival provides a nurturing environment for African American filmmakers and audiences in the historic summertime vacation destination. The new screening series in the DC area, The Color of Conversation Film Series, represents an extension of MVAAFF’s dedication to support the creation and advancement of innovative, artistic cinematic works for both emerging and seasoned filmmakers of color. The Color of Conversation Film Series seeks to stimulate an appreciation of film as an art form and encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the conversation.

Floyd and Stephanie Rance, Co-Founders of Run&Shoot Filmworks proudly embrace the passion, vision, and independent spirit of talented artists. The Colors of Conversation Film Series invites a global audience to hear from the creative behind such films. “Several years ago, Floyd and I developed The Color of Conversation Series with Macy’s and CBS on a smaller scale. Expanding the event is a natural progression to expand into a full-blown film series,” states Stephanie Rance. “The Color of Conversation adds compelling programming to the Run&Shoot Filmworks portfolio and gives attendees who can’t make it to our Martha’s Vineyard festival a chance to participate in the films industries premium storyteller event.

Todd Hitchcock, Director of Programming at the AFI Silver Theatre, states “We were thrilled to be asked to partner with Stephanie and Floyd on this new undertaking. We were aware of their success with the film festival up in Martha’s Vineyard, and extending their innovative programming’s outreach to the Washington, DC area is sure to connect with a receptive audience. AFI Silver’s year-round program of film series and festivals features a diverse array of both contemporary and classic films from around the world. The Color of Conversation Film Series will make for a unique and exciting new addition to the AFI Silver program, and one that we can’t wait to share with our audience.”

The complete lineup for the inaugural edition of The Color of Conversation Film Series will be announced in May. Screenings and panel discussions are being planned that will highlight current events, historical perspectives and the film world’s role within and relationship to larger topics of intersectionality (racism, sexism, classism etc.). Several screenings and panel discussions across the four-day event will examine topics like: the future of multi-cultural media and the often-untold impact people of color have had on the entertainment industry; the current dialogue in–and about–the media on sexual abuse, assault and the massive response from women (and men) from every walk of life; and how issues of race and class, and representations thereof, continue to play a pervasive role in U.S. politics and policies since Reconstruction.
