CVS manager, Morry Matson. calling the police on a Black customer
Chicago, IL — Camilla Hudson, a Black woman from Chicago, wanted to use a manufacturer’s coupon at a CVS Pharmacy on North Broadway last Friday when the manager said he wasn’t aware of such a coupon and then decided to call the police claiming that she had a fake coupon. But the coupon was legit!
Hudson recorded the manager, identified as Morry Matson, as he can be shaking in the video while he spoke to the police on the phone. He can be seen describing Hudson to the police, calling her African-American in which she responded, “I’m black. Black isn’t a bad word.”
Matson, who is running for 48th Ward alderman, is campaigning for “increased police presence throughout Alderman Matson’s 48th Ward.” He was also specified as a state delegate for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election and president of the Log Cabin Republicans of Illinois, a group advocating for LGBTQ conservatives.
Hudson said three police officers came to the store in response to Matson’s call and spoke to her before she left the store.
CVS has since apologized to Hudson for the incident and CVS spokesperson Mike DeAngelis said in a statement, “CVS has begun an investigation and we will take any corrective action that is warranted to prevent it from happening again.
“CVS Pharmacy does not tolerate any practices that discriminate against any customer and we are committed to maintaining a welcoming and diverse environment in our stores. We have firm non-discrimination policies in place to help ensure that all customers are treated with respect and dignity. Profiling or any other type of discriminatory behavior is strictly prohibited,” it continued.
Hudson confirmed that CVS regional director Joe Haas has “apologized profusely” regarding the incident. Meanwhile, Facebook has taken down her original viral post for allegedly violating a policy, but she has since reposted the video.
