Nairobi, Kenya — A Chinese man who made racist comments against Kenyans in a viral video has been deported from the country, according to Kenya’s immigration department. The man, identified as Liu Jiaqi, was caught on the video calling all Kenyans, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, “monkeys.”

An employee secretly took a video of Jiaqi, who is a motorcycle trader, saying that he doesn’t like Kenya becauseĀ it “smells bad and [its people are] poor, foolish and black.” He even said that every Kenyan is like a monkey, including the country’s President.

Authorities said Jiaqi was arrested hours after the video spread online on September 5. His work permit was also revoked and he was deported “due to his racism remarks, according to the immigration department.

Jiaqi, who had been working in Kenya for over eight months at a motorcycle company called Sonlink, appeared to be threatening to fire an employee in the three-minute video which was allegedly filmed in June. When the employee asked Jiaqi why he was being targeted, he said it’s because he is Kenyan. He then went on with his racist tirades on why he disliked the country and its people.

The Chinese Embassy in Nairobi’s spokesperson Zhang Gang said that Jiaqi has already faced punishment from his company and has apologized to his Kenyan colleague. Gang also noted that “the personal talk and personal feeling of this young man does not represent the views of the vast majority of Chinese people.”

“The Chinese Embassy always requires the Chinese companies and individuals to… stay and work legally in Kenya, making positive contribution to the friendship and cooperation between China and Kenya,” he concluded.
