Black Attorney Launches New Program to Encourage Entrepreneurs and Help Them Turn Their Ideas into Products

— “Urban Brilliance” Program Helps Individuals Start the Process of Developing Their Ideas —

Nationwide — According to Attorney Darcell Walker, TV shows like ABC’s “Shark Tank” and CNBC’s “Make Me a Millionaire Inventor” reveal only a small fraction of the tens of thousands of ideas ordinary people have for products. He comments, “Creativity is all around us. This creativity is especially on display in our urban communities and among individuals who grew up with the Internet.”

Walker continues, “Creativity is analogous to a natural resource such as oil. When a company explores for oil, the process requires finding it, extracting (producing) it, refining it and making it available in the form of commercial products. In a similar manner, developing one’s creative ideas is a process. However, without the knowledge and guidance to move forward, many become frustrated and fearful. As a result, they just hold on to the idea. For other people, because they do not know how the process, the thought of developing the idea never dawns on them. A person may say ‘someone should invent a product to do this…’ The one making the statement does not realize they are that someone.”

Walker, a lawyer with over 25 years of experience with patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets and product licensing, says “our communities are untapped intellectual resources.” To help people mine these resources, he has launched a new program called “Urban Brilliance” that explains and guides people through the various steps of the product development process. This program includes workshops, workbook materials, audio-visual resources, individual consultations and group sessions. The resources are available for use by individuals or small groups. Walker has initially presented this information to small groups and in some churches and schools.

One of his resources, Start Pursuing Your Passion Today!, helps an individual create a 5-step plan that will enable the person to develop their idea. Pursuing an idea is analogous to a relay race. It is a journey. It is a progression toward an end (a finish line). Like the initial runner, a person has to start out of the blocks and take the first step. Like the runner, a person will work with others to achieve the goal. In a race, the track has lanes. Like the runner, a person has to follow a path (a plan) to get to the goal. The lane establishes boundaries for the runner during the race.

In the pursuit of one’s passion, it is important to stay on the designed path. Walker identifies some initial activities one can do in this process:

* Document Activities Related to the Idea
* Keep The Idea Confidential (Only Disclose to People Assisting You)
* Seek Advice and Assistance
* Secure Rights From Others Assisting You

Walker says, “People have ideas for technical products, artistic products, and new business concepts. Also, not every person with an idea wants to start a business. Some people want to develop the idea and then license it.” As an example, Walker cites a young mother who developed a safer baby bath and water toy. In another example, a high school student developed a concept for a new video game. Walker has also worked with college students who are developing sophisticated sports equipment. The artistic creativity is evident in the entertainment industry. However, this creativity exists in other areas as well.

Walker recalls the story of a man who sold his property and set out on a journey to find his fortune. He did not know his fortune was under the land he sold. Many people do not realize they already possess the source of the fortune and success that they seek.

In addition to his legal experience, Attorney Walker holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Prairie View A&M University, a master’s degree in engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law, and a master’s in divinity from Southern Methodist University. Walker is the author of the book Godly Ideas – Developing and Protecting Your God-Given Ideas. (published by AuthorHouse).
