Nationwide — Meet Ashley Williams and Khat Brim, the founders of a multi-million dollar e-commerce brand called Hair Are Us, which is now a major supplier of high-quality extensions, weaves, and wigs that has employed up to 25 people and managed three retail/ salon locations and a full-functioning warehouse.
As a teenager, Ashley left her hometown of Austin, Texas to attend Morris Brown College in Atlanta, but ended up completing her Bachelor’s degree at Georgia State University. Afterward, she began working in the entertainment industry with top producers and even landed a job at Tyler Perry Studios.
“She comments, “I was always good at numbers, organizing, and executing whatever project I was dealt. In fact, my mentors started calling me ‘A$hMoney’ or ‘Ashley Kashley’ because they were so enamored with my ability to get the job done!”
Ashley was so intuitive that she even once appeared as a contestant on BET’s short-lived reality show The Ultimate Hustler, where a group of entrepreneurs competed against each other for an executive-level position.
Building their own
More than 10 years ago, Ashley became so frustrated about working for other people that she decided to partner with her best friend, Khat, who was a professional hairstylist for many years. The two of them decided to come up with a plan to launch Hair Are Us to get a piece of the pie of the multi-billion dollar hair industry. So, they began selling products out of the trunks of their cars.
At the time, they were hoping to make just enough money to cover their monthly bills, but they had no idea that their $1,000 investment each would yield them $2 million in revenue in less than two years!
They comment, “We went from selling bundles out of the trunks of our cars in parking lots to having three retail stores and a thriving e-commerce business. We’ve had many ups and downs. But we have learned so much from starting, maintaining, and growing a business by doing this together.”
More than a decade later, and their company is still a respected leader in the industry.
