Sherman Hemsley and Marla Gibbs reunite to host TV One's Amen/227 marathon Sept. 26-30

Silver Spring, MD (BlackNews.com) - This fall TV One will reunite classic series Amen and 227, two popular sitcoms that aired back-to-back on NBC in the 1980s, introducing the adjacent series in a special Comedy Smackdown marathon September Monday, Sept. 26-Friday, Sept. 30 from 6 - 10 PM, repeating from midnight 4 AM (all times ET). The marathon will be hosted by former co-stars of The Jeffersons, Sherman Hemsley, who stars in Amen, and Marla Gibbs, star of 227.

Beginning October 3rd, 227 and Amen will take their place in the regular schedule, airing back-to-back from 6-7 PM as part of TV Ones Look Back Laugh Attack block scheduled from 6-8 PM weeknights.

Amen stars Sherman Hemsley as Deacon Ernest Frye of the First Community Church of Philadelphia and focuses on the comedic struggle between the deacon and the church's new minister (Clifton Davis). The series, which first aired on NBC from 1986-1991, also stars Anna Maria Horsford as the deacon's daughter Thelma, smitten with the bachelor minister, and Roz Ryan, Barbara Montgomery and Jester Hairston as involved members of the church congregation.

The award-winning series 227, which aired for five seasons (1985-1990), stars Marla Gibbs as Mary Jenkins, who with her family lives in an urban apartment building that is chock full of entertaining and memorable characters, including the wise-cracking, scatter-brained Sandra Clark, played by Jackee Harry. The series also features Regina King as the Jenkins' teenage daughter Brenda.

"We are delighted to add Amen to the TV One schedule, and to reunite Amen and 227, which were so popular among African Americans in the 1980s," said TV One President and CEO Johnathan Rodgers.
