"Big Ideas for a Small Planet" airs as part of THE GREEN, a weekly primetime destination airing Tuesdays on Sundance Channel that focuses on environmental topics. With THE GREEN, Sundance Channel became the first television network in the United States to establish a major, regularly-scheduled programming destination dedicated entirely to the environment. THE GREEN reflects the current tipping point in public awareness about ecological issues and the trend towards environmentally sustainable approaches to modern living. The destination is designed to be both edifying and entertaining, with an emphasis on information, practical advice and community building.
Kalahari is a new, sustainable, mixed-income condominium located at 40 West 116th Street in Manhattan's vibrant Central Harlem neighborhood. Set for completion later this year, the development will include 249 homes and feature traditional African symbols and designs throughout, including the traditional Adinkra symbol that wraps the façade. Kalahari will also house community and cultural venues, consistent with the developers' vision of area-wide revitalization.
One of Manhattan's greenest residences to date, Kalahari utilizes wind-generated energy and on-site solar panels that supply an impressive 25 percent of the building's energy. The property also features a fresh-filtered air delivery system, purifying air quality at a constant rate. Energy-Star appliances paired with the unique features of the residence reduce energy consumption by 30% below the New York State Energy Code. It has also garnered a reputation as a top residential choice for residents seeking the best value in today's home buying market. Mr. Brown is also the only developer to serve on Mayor Bloomberg's prestigious Board of Long Term Planning and Sustainability.
Majora Carter is an award-winning community activist/organizer and life-long resident of the Hunts Point community in the South Bronx. She is the founder and executive director of Sustainable South Bronx, a community organization dedicated to the implementation of sustainable development projects for the South Bronx that are informed by the needs of community and values of environmental justice. She has conceived and raised funds for key community projects including the South Bronx Greenway, a bicycle/pedestrian greenway along the South Bronx River, and the Hunts Point Riverside Park, the first South Bronx waterfront park in 60 years. Carter has received numerous honors for her work, including the 2007 NYU Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award, the 2006 Lewis Rudin Award for Public Service and the 2002 Union Square Award from the Fund for the City of New York. She was named a 2005 Fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Majora is a graduate of PS 48, IS 74, the Bronx High School of Science, Wesleyan University (BA) and New York University (MFA).
The "Big Ideas for a Small Planet: Build" episode airing on April 24th features three different "green" homes that prove comfort and style are quite compatible with low-impact building practices. The minds behind these residences are Michelle Kaufman, architect and creator of the prefab Glidehouse modular house; Carlton Brown, a visionary real estate developer bringing green buildings and amenities to low-income neighborhoods including Harlem; and Mitchell Joachim graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who is working on the Fab Tree Hab, a home grown from living trees.
