Bobby's
exciting performances in the Martin Scorsese-produced
film The Road to Memphis introduced him to many
new fans around the world. Back home he captured his
exciting stage show on a DVD, Live At Ground Zero,
recorded at Morgan Freeman's Ground Zero Blues Club
in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
On his
last CD Folk Funk, Bobby teamed up with acclaimed
guitarist Alvin Youngblood Hart to explore his funk,
gospel, and blues roots, and earlier this year Bobby
performed at the Delta Blues Festival in Greenville
backed by a 25-piece big-band. Night Fishin'
marks Bobby's return on CD to the classic sound of his
regular live performances.
"People
know more about me than they did four or five years
ago, but I'm still doing the same thing," says Rush.
So the basic idea of Night Fishin' is nothing
new, but the approach is new.
The title song plays on Mississippi's role as the capital
of catfish as well Bobby's well-known talents with a
rod and reel. "You have a long pole to reach the catfish
at the bottom," says Bobby.
Another
highlight is G-String, in which an overworked
man tells his woman all she needs is to bring on a needed
romantic getaway is a toothbrush and g-string. On the
ballad You Make One Step, Bobby shows a tender
side that's sometimes hard to see behind his flamboyant
stage persona.
"Its a
biblical saying. If you make one step, I'll make two,"
explains Bobby. "But here its about romance, If you
lay down, I'll turn you over. I wanted to do a sweet
kind of song because its time for me to do something
thats kind of easy-going. That's me too - I'm easy-going.
I move real fast because my name is Rush, but I'm not
hard to catch. Sometimes a tomcat will be hollering
when something is chasing it, but other times they want
to be caught."
