The Story
Whitfield
Grant introduces new modern day heroes, a new league
of "extraordinary gentlemen," who not only strive for
their "personal best," but genuinely thrive from their
commitments to family and lifelong friendships. Readers
will be more than fulfilled by Grant's smoothly executed
coupling of the suspense thriller genre with the heart-felt
story of a decent man drawn into a mysterious web of
lies and danger, out of which he can only be rescued
by the ties that thank fully bind him - those of the
friends and family he loves.
The book
starts when 11-year old Anthony Williams witnesses the
whipping and lynching of his cousin in rural Alabama.
This traumatic event spurs a family move to California
in hope of escaping the racial repression commonly experienced
in the South. In his new home, Tony becomes friends
with Adrian Christopher and Errol Forrest Jr. All three
excel academically as well as in their athletic pursuits.
All three swear an allegiance to each other and become
lifelong friends.
Years later,
Tony Williams is a star free safety for a professional
football team, in addition to being a highly respected
member of his community. Happily married, he always
rejects advances from female fans. During a pre-game
party for the Pro-Bowl in Hawaii, a young white women
solicits sexual favors from Tony. He rebukes her advances
and publicly humiliates the woman. Furious at his refusal
to sleep with her, the woman plots her revenge. Her
resources are almost limitless in that she is the daughter
of the owner of the team for which he plays. She stalks
and later accuses Tony of assault and rape, throwing
his life into an unimaginable tailspin. Tony calls on
his two lifelong friends to help him clear his name;
Adrian is also a professional football player and Errol
is a third-year law student. With an Interpol-affiliated
Irishman and his mysterious ally, as well as a committed
defense attorney, the friends, together with Tony's
leonine wife, Shelli, take their stand against the racially-charged
accusations of rape levied by a prominent family. Forced
to endure the pressure of a highly- publicized trial
led by an ambitious young prosecutor, Tony and his entourage
of family and friends, also have to uncover a mysterious
threat lurking behind the scenes - but on whose orders?

needed to know who did it."
