Siyavuka:
A Black History Celebration At The Queen Mary February 25-27
Exhibits, Food Vendors, Live Entertainment
and Much More!
Long
Beach, CA (BlackNews.com) - The Queen Mary presents
Siyavuka, a three-day celebration of Black History aboard
the historic ocean liner, -- Feb. 25, 26 and 27. The word
"Siyavuka," which means "we are waking up,"
originated from an indigenous South African tribe known
as Xhosa (pronounced Ko-sa).
Siyavuka,
which is sponsored by PacifiCare's African American Health
Solutions (AAHS), promises to be a one-of-a-kind wakening
experience that will stimulate the mind, heart and soul
of the community and surrounding residents of Southern California.
A formal
affair will kick off the three-day celebration Friday, Feb.
25, at 6 p.m. in the Queen's Salon of the Queen Mary. Tickets
to the event are $150 per person, and include: a hosted
bar; four-course dinner; a live music concert featuring
jazz artist Eric Darius and the legendary Dionne Warwick;
plus admission to the Sunday Gospel buffet. Portions of
the event's proceeds will be donated to the American Diabetes
Association.
The
festival will continue Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to
6 p.m. in the Queen Mary Seawalk with ethnic food, arts/crafts,
acrobats, drummers, dance troupes, educational programs,
speakers, community-themed booths and live entertainment.
In the evening there will be a dance party complete with
live music from the group "Funjala" and a DJ.
In addition,
festivalgoers can take advantage of the Siyavuka Health
Pavilion, sponsored by PacifiCare. The Health Pavilion will
be hosted by Mother Love, a well-known TV personality and
international motivational speaker, who recently changed
her life by losing more than 100 pounds through diet and
exercise in order to better manager her diabetes.
Attendees
will receive free educational information, health screenings
and special giveaways, plus chair massages at no cost on
a first-come, first-serve basis.
"PacifiCare
is proud to be a part of this exciting event and share important
health information with families about ways to improve their
lives for generations to come," said Bridget Harper,
vice president of PacifiCare's African American Health Solutions.
"The Queen Mary is known for its rich and vast history,
and we're happy to contribute to this legacy by hosting
the first Black History Celebration for the City of Long
Beach and all people of Southern California."
The
Siyavuka celebration concludes Sunday, Feb. 27, with festival
activities taking place in the Seawalk from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. Admission to the Seawalk on the 26th and 27th is complimentary.
A special Gospel Buffet will be offered Sunday, Feb. 27,
in the Queen's Salon of the Queen Mary. The price of the
buffet is $25 per person and includes an all-you-can-eat
Southern-style buffet and live gospel entertainment from
local artists.
The
Hotel Queen Mary is offering special festival hotel packages.
