Web Service Offering Online Education and Awareness on Prostate Health Targets Black Men

(BlackNews.com) - The Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN),
a Boston-based non-profit organization, today introduced its
newest team member, "DR. PSA." This interactive web-based
tool is designed to help educate men and their families about
prostate health in an effort towards eliminating the African
American prostate cancer disparity. DR. PSA takes his name
from the most recognizable measure for prostate health; Prostate
Specific Antigen - known as PSA.
Many men lack
knowledge of their prostate health, and feel embarrassed to
speak about it-even with their personal doctor. While not
an actual physician, DR. PSA is an internet personality who
serves as a confidant and guide to men, giving a "face" to
the important issue of prostate health education and awareness.
Although not intended to be a substitute for one's personal
physician, DR. PSA does provide basic information that will
help men and their families communicate more effectively with
their doctors and share in important decisions from prostate
cancer screening to treatment.
"DR.
PSA is another critical and innovative service that
PHEN is using to increase prostate health education
and awareness among the men who need this knowledge
most," said PHEN President and founder Thomas A. Farrington.
"More Blacks are on the internet today and PHEN will
use this medium extensively to increase our outreach
to educate and save lives."
By using this technology, PHEN hopes to broaden its
educational efforts by targeting men and women who might
have questions about prostate health, but need basic
knowledge in order to address them effectively. For
example, in his online forum, "Prostate Health 101,"
DR. PSA provides access to important information beginning
with answering the question; "what is the prostate?"
A key element in winning a battle against prostate cancer
is education and awareness for men and their families.
Although prostate cancer can cause death, it can be
cured with early detection and proper treatment. DR.
PSA aims to provide the knowledge and awareness that
can help lead to early cancer detection, and reduce
the death rate of Black men, who are twice as likely
(2.4 times) to die from prostate cancer than men of
any other racial or ethnic group.
"DR.
PSA will open the initial lines of communication among
men concerned about their own prostate health-and also
women who want to understand, communicate, or help manage
the prostate health of their fathers, husbands, sons,
or other loved ones." adds Farrington. "The goal here
is to bring men and their families one step closer to
early detection, and to surviving prostate cancer."

Inc, (PHEN) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded
in Boston by Thomas A. Farrington, an African American
prostate cancer survivor and author of the books, Battling
the Killer Within and Battling the Killer Within
and Winning." PHEN's mission is to increase prostate
health education and awareness among African American
men to help save lives and reduce the prostate cancer
racial mortality disparity. The Organization has successfully
implemented a model that forms unique partnerships between
prostate cancer survivors, community organizations,
