Save Your Waistline, Save Your Money? New Book Features Budget-Friendly Weight Loss Strategies
Kimberly Floyd
Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) - "How can people on a modest income eat a healthy diet and lose weight?" Knowing that eating healthy can be expensive, the question stumped author Kimberly Floyd and she became determined to find answers. Her new book MoneyWise Weight Loss: The Faith-based Plan for Building a Better Body on a Budget contains the strategies she uncovered.
Having lost 85 pounds and 14 dress sizes herself, the former registered nurse found that conventional weight loss programs can cost up to $14 a day. After reading that the average low income family can only spend $25 per person per week on food, she dared herself to eat healthy while spending that amount each week.
"I
did it for a month and it was challenging," Floyd said,
"but I did find ways to save money on the fruits, vegetables,
lean protein, and whole grains that can help us get
our waistlines back. Plus, I discovered how much we
can save just by taking small steps to lose excess weight."
Floyd's budget-friendly weight loss tips include:
* Trade soft drinks for water. Lose 12 pounds and save
$200/year.
* Trade cookies, chips, or candy bars for a high fiber
fruit (apple, orange, pear) as snacks. Lose 12 pounds
and save $75/year
* Walk for 15 minutes, 3 times a day. Lose 10% body
weight and save $2,000-5,300 in future medical costs.
Floyd also stated that those who suffer from obesity
most are those who can least afford it. She sited an
August 2006 article by Dr. Adam Drewnoski in the American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition in which Drewnoski asserted:
"There is no question that the rates of obesity and
type 2 diabetes in the United States follow a socioeconomic
gradient, such that the burden of disease falls disproportionately
on people with limited resources, racial-ethnic minorities,
and the poor."
Floyd concluded, "Making small consistent changes are
the keys to achieving your ideal weight. Not only does
it pay off big in increased energy, health, and confidence,
but it's a critical strategy for improving your finances."
