East Orange Police Athletic League (PAL) Launches Male Mentoring Group With Community Groups to Reduce Crime

East Orange, NJ (BlackNews.com) - On Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 10:00 a.m., at 15 James Street, Newark, New Jersey, The East Orange PAL, The Newark Police Athletic League (PAL), Women in Support of the Million Man March (WISOMMM)-Newark, and Voices of Inspiration Community Enrichment Services (VOICES)-Newark will launch a male mentoring program.
The launch is open to the entire community, males, females, parents, grandparents, service providers, educators and concerned citizens.
The program developed by retired East Orange Police Sergeant De Lacy Davis, East Orange PAL executive director, is called M.O.V.E., Men Of Value and Enrichment. According to Davis, "It is designed to address the rising tide of youth violence, gang violence, and domestic violence. We will use an African-centered Rites of Passage model to help with a larger 'Boycott Crime Campaign.' The goal is to create positive communities with positive male role models."
The program participants will meet bi-weekly on Saturday mornings at the East Orange PAL House, 116 North Oraton Parkway, East Orange, New Jersey and at the WISOMMM African Educational Cultural Resource Center, 15 James Street, Newark, New Jersey, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The 6-month program will service males ages 10-18.
The program trainings and workshops will include Grammy Award winning songwriter/producer James Mtume; Essex County Vo-Tech teacher Ce Ce Rogers; Baruti Kafele, author of A Black Parent's Handbook to Educating Your Children (Outside of the Classroom) and A Handbook for Teachers of African American Children; 25-year-old Minister Keon Gerrow, (Philadelphia, PA); Bishop Donald Hilliard, (Perth Amboy); Dr. Tyrone Powers, author of Eyes to My Soul: The Rise or Decline of a Black FBI Agent; Alfred "Coach" Powell, author of Hip Hop Hypocrisy: When Lies Sound Like The Truth; Dr. Aundrey Bundley, Author and principal in Baltimore, MD; members of Saving Our Selves, Inc.; former street gang members of the Bloods and the Crips; Sgt. Zaid Braswell, executive director, Newark PAL; and Dr. L. Nathan Hare, the curriculum developer from Buffalo, New York who will begin with a gut-wrenching slave monologue, Black Man Stop the Violence.
According to Sgt. Davis, "This is an opportunity for all of the positive components of our community to galvanize our resources, develop synergy and to direct it toward creating a better place for all of us starting with the twin cities East Orange and Newark, then moving to other communities."
