Noted Youth Counselor Provides Sure-Fire Tips For Parents To Connect With Teens

Bookcover

Author - Mack McGhee

Chicago, IL (BlackNews.com) - Mack D. McGhee, a nationally-recognized youth counselor, motivational speaker and author, has devised a set of ten sure-fire strategies that parents can use to connect with their teens and put them on the path to success.

McGhee, who is an administrator with the anti-crime program Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities, which was recently profiled in a PBS special for its effectiveness at turning ex-offenders' lives around, says the tips, if applied with patience, passion and conviction, can yield success.

"With summer upon us and more teens at home," says McGhee, "now is an ideal time to put these tips into action."

McGhee, who is featured in From Mediocre to Magnificent - a compendium featuring the nation's top motivational speakers - says many of the tactics can be found in the book, which can be purchased by calling 1-888-624-4333 or by logging on to www.mackdmcghee.com.

To reach teens, Mack advises parents to:

1. Crack the Code. Learn the lingo.
Teens now have their own language. You will ultimately be shut out and blindsided if you don't know what your teens are talking about.

2. Be the Parent Not the Friend.
You have to remain the disciplinarian and authority figure in their lives.

3. Be an Example.
Show an example worth following. Also, never make a threat that you cannot back up.

4. Keep the Lines of Communication Open.
Talk so your teens will listen. Listen so your teens will talk.

5. Get Involved. Show Up. Be Supportive.
Show up to their events. It means the world to them and actually they will perform better because you are there. Every kid wants their parents to be proud of them

6. Put Family First.
Despite their desires to be with their friends, insist on spending time with family. Make sure that the time spent is quality time and possibly something fun and exciting that your teens can be a part of.

7. Never Give Up.
Many times you want to just throw in the towel. Remember you are raising the next generation, maybe even the next president of the United States. Certainly you are raising someone who will reflect you. Give your teen all the nurturing that you can, even when you are totally burned out.

8. P.U.S.H - Pray Until Something Happens.
Make sure that worship is a part of your problem-solving activities and strategy.

9. Be Everything to Your Teen.
To stay tuned and stay in touch, you have to be everything: Friend, foe, teacher, mommy, daddy and, in some cases, a magician.

10. Love Unconditionally.
No matter what, let your child know that no matter what, you love them, want them to succeed and know they will. Positive reinforcement always works.

About Mack D. McGhee
McGhee, of University Park Illinois, was brutally attacked by youths at age 19. Now 36, he has become a nationally-renowned counselor with an impressive record of connecting youth through a compelling message.
