The field of Special Event Planning is a multi-billion dollar industry that will continue to grow through the next several decades. Many organizations are now recognizing the need for professional special event planners across the United States. Event planners can be found in organizations ranging from small to large corporations and in professional associations. Independently, there are also hundreds of event planners across the country, Asian, Hispanic, African American, Native American, that also create and produce special events and festivals on their own as entrepreneurs for their respective communities.

Traditionally, minorities within the special events industry have not studied within the field of special events or taken applicable coursework to enhance their experience. For the most part, minority event planners have sort of "fallen into" event planning one way or another, without education, without support, without guidance and without a network that can provide experience, advise, and case history in the area of special events.

In 2002, Katrina Anderson noticed that there appeared to be strong networks of event planning groups, associations and events, but none that seemed to target issues and concerns facing minority cultures. Planning a large scale event takes on an entirely different meaning for a minority population, from trying to secure the venue you really want, to handling the media if something goes wrong with the event. That same year, Anderson founded the Minorities in Special Events Conference (MSE Conference). The MSE Conference is designed to provide both educational and networking opportunities for its attendees. The MSE Conference targets event planners/producers, event marketers, public relations professionals, festivals, conventions, concerts, corporate sponsors and anyone involved in the special events industry. All are encouraged to attend.

Full conference registration is currently available. The Power Networking Lunches take place on Thursday and Friday and are open to the public. The Power Networking Lunches feature presentations, networking and access to the MSE Marketplace. The full conference fee in advance is $250 until March 28, 2004 and $275 on-site. The Power Networking Lunches are $50 per day or $85 for two days. Sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are still available.
