Jesse Jackson Travels To Storm-Damaged Areas of Louisiana

By The Associated Press

The Rev. Jesse Jackson arrived in Louisiana on Thursday to help people evacuate the storm-ravaged New Orleans area and to see the devastation Hurricane Katrina has wrought on the city.

Jackson was headed into New Orleans with state Sen. Cleo Fields and three buses to move 450 students from Xavier University to safer locations outside the city and then make repeated roundtrips throughout the night to help others escape.

"I want them to know help is on the way and to keep their hope alive," Jackson said in Baton Rouge before leaving for the 70-mile trip.

Planning to stay for about six days in Louisiana, Jackson chided media reports that focused on looting and violence, saying the reports portrayed people as animals and adding he wasn't afraid to go into New Orleans.

"We're going to New Orleans today without a security guard," he said. "We trust people."

In response to the looting issue, Jackson says that people are just trying to survive and cling to anything they can.
