Washington,
DC
(BlackNews.com) - Spring has sprung, and its time to rip
the runway at the District's premier of The Divine Legacy
Greek Fashion Explosion on Wednesday, April 19th, 8:00
p.m. at Howard University's Cramton Auditorium, hosted
by Ahmad Rashad, Jr. This is the official fashion show
where Black Greeks will come together in a positive way
to display unity.
Divine Legacy is unique in being the only traveling
fashion show of its kind to combine fashion and trend-setting
style with the history of the nine historically Black
Greek-letter organizations (BGLOs), affectionately known
as the Divine Nine. This spectacular event is produced
by Raiquel A. Cole, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc., graduate of Howard University, and CEO/President
of Amourai, a trendy clothing line for women; and Zeanique
L. Barber, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
graduate of Florida A&M University, and CEO/President
of Z La Z, an extravagant, luxurious special events
company. They are also the co-founders of QUE Entertainment.
The fashion show will feature local and national designers
displaying fashions inspired by each organization; and
a performance by Ja Ja Productions, a jazz-influenced
hip-hop band, featuring actor and artist Malcolm-Jamal
Warner.
2006 marks the centennial of the inception of BGLOs,
beginning with the founding of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
Inc., in 1906 on the campus of Cornell University. The
show's venue is fitting, as Howard University's campus
is the birthplace of 5 of the 9 BGLOs, including Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the oldest Black Greek-letter
sorority for college women. Different from other collegiate
sororities and fraternities, membership in a BGLO is
for life and members are encouraged and expected to
remain active in their organizations beyond their college
experience. Over the past 100 years, now with a membership
of more than 2.5 million, BGLOs have created a legacy
of uplifting their communities through community service
initiatives and programs that address education/literacy,
economic empowerment, health and wellness, and political
activism.
In keeping with the common mission of all BGLOs, Divine
Legacy presents fashion with a focus on community service
and scholarship. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit
a fund developed by The Empowerment Network (www.tenpower.com)
that assists Hurricane Katrina victims in obtaining
their GED.
Countless influential African-Americans that have made
their mark in various fields of politics, public service,
sports, entertainment, and the arts, are member of BGLOs
- including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Johnnie
Cochran, Shaquille O'Neal, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou,
Bill Cosby, Tavis Smiley, Dorothy Height, Zora Neale
Hurston, Michael Jordan, and Jesse Jackson.
