"AAU basketball is one of the leading athletic organizations in the country, and this year's Super Regional in Texas will be an opportunity for local teams and teams from as far away as Atlanta, Memphis and Indiana to compete at the highest level and prepare for the National Championships this summer," said Reginald Grigsby, owner of i9 Sports of North Texas, which is hosting the May 2007 AAU Boys Basketball Super Regional Championship.
"The Super Regional Championship will be an exciting event for spectators and the media as well, because they will have a chance to watch some of tomorrow's basketball superstars," Mr. Grigsby added.
The list of former AAU players who have graduated to the National Basketball Association reads like a "who's who" of hoops stars. Allen Iverson, Alonzo Mourning, Amare Stoutamire, Baron Davis, Elton Brand, Grant Hill, Isiah Thomas, Jermaine O'Neal, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Ray Allen and Shaquille O'Neal are among the hundreds of boys who used AAU basketball as a stepping stone to the NBA.
About AAU
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs.
The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sport. During its early years the AAU served as a leader in international sport representing the U.S. in the international sports federations. The AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU has focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages beginning at the grass roots level. The
philosophy of "Sports for All, Forever," is shared by over 500,000 participants and over 50,000 volunteers. The AAU is divided into 57 distinct Districts. These Districts annually sanction more than 34 sports programs, 250 national championships, and over 30,000 age division events.
