Oakland-Based Making a New Reality Foundation Announces Inaugural "World Game Changer Day" November 4, 2009; Kicks Off Year Long Series of National Events Designed to Promote Sustainable Change
City of Oakland Issues Proclamation Designating November 4 "World Game Changer Day"; 2010 Symposium Slated for UC Berkeley
Oakland, CA (BlackNews.com) - In the months following the milestone presidential election of Barack Obama, S. Raye Mitchell, Oakland, California, Harvard Law School graduate and founder/CEO of Making a New Reality Foundation, reflected on both the process and progress of change across the country. Not wanting the heady celebrations of the November 2008 election and presidential inauguration in January 2009 to give way to complacency, Mitchell began work on projects to celebrate the spirit and the power of the electorate at its source, "We the People."
Inspired by President Obama's call to action, Mitchell started looking to create a series of events that would unite and re-ignite the passionate, positive change achievable only through active engagement. She began putting a leadership team together, knocking on doors seeking volunteers, ideas and funding and, armed with the notion of creating World Game Changer Day, secured a Proclamation from the City of Oakland designating November 4, 2009 as "World Game Changer Day," and put in place programs to move forward with innovative "game changing" actions. Her goal? Continue the momentum to create sustainable change and engagement.
"'We the People' is arguably the most powerful concept in the world; we have control over our destiny," said Mitchell. "President Obama issued the call -- the election victory was a chance to make change happen. It's not enough to hope someone will do it for us. We have to stay focused with an ongoing commitment. We all worked hard for an election and we don't want to lose that momentum. 'We the people' are still the power that makes change possible."
Coinciding with the anniversary of what Mitchell agrees is a "game changing" event, the 2008 presidential election, World Game Changer Day is the kick off of a year long series of national events designed to inspire and create sustainable change by recognizing the change agents, "ordinary folks" and the grass roots organizations that made the historic change movement of 2008 a reality. "We are uniting to send a powerful message to national and global leaders that 'we the people' can -- and will -- keep the change movement alive and moving forward," stated Mitchell.
"World Game Changer Day" Activities
"We've made 'World Game Changer Day' accessible for everyone," Mitchell continued. "We've created change celebrations, both 'real world' and 'virtual,' so all of us can reflect, remember and re-inspire." The events outlined by Mitchell:
* Host a "virtual" World Game Changer Day event by inviting virtual friends, family, fellow change agents, community and supporters to logon http://tinyurl.com/ycbdg9m to get a 'ticket'; linkable to participant's Facebook, Twitter, mySpace and LinkedIn communities.
* Host a live World Game Changer Day event by inviting friends, community and supporters to join in at home, office or at a community center, and then email info@ichope2.com with what your change commitment will be over the next year. We are building a forum to connect change agents.
* Sign the online petition http://tinyurl.com/y9fgd5p for a Congressional Bipartisan Resolution supporting the people and the inaugural World Game Changer Day.
World Game Changer Symposium Slated for Spring, 2010 In Conjunction With UC Berkeley
Noting education is key to creating access and inclusion, keeping the electorate informed, engaged and participating in dialogue and action necessary to create sustainable change, Mitchell points to the upcoming I C HOPE "Game Changing Moves-Change Leadership Symposium," the first in a national series, scheduled for Spring 2010 at the University of California, Berkeley.
"Our conference theme is about solutions, action and creating sustainable change; the series will start with a focus on the vital role of our public educational institutions in ensuring diversity and access to educational excellence and change leadership," said Mitchell. "We have a firm, written commitment from the University of California, Berkeley to partner and host the Symposium 2010 event. There is much work ahead; however, we are at the launch point of something exciting and interesting."
