Sean Groubert, Former SC State Trooper

Columbia, SC — A video has been released showing a former South Carolina state trooper shooting an unarmed man after he was pulled over for a traffic stop. In the video, which was recorded from the police vehicle dash camera, 31-year old Officer Sean Groubert (who is white) asks 35-year old Levar Jones (who is Black) for his driver’s license, and starts shooting at him when Jones goes to retrieve it.

While shooting, the officer can be heard yelling, “Get out of the car, get out of the car. Get on the ground.” And Jones can be seen putting his hands up, dropping to the ground, and pleading, “I just got my license, you said get my license.”

After the situation calms down, the officer can be heard asking Jones if he was hit by a bullet. Then, Jones asks, “What did I do?” and the officer replies, “Bro, you dove head first back into your car.”

The incident took place at a Circle K gas station in Columbia, SC, and fortunately Jones was hit by only one bullet in the hip. He is reportedly recovering at home after being released from the hospital.

Meanwhile, Officer Groubert has been fired, and officially charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in connection with the incident. The judge set his bond at $75,000, and he faces up to 20 years in prison. Leroy Smith, the director of the South Carolina Dept of Public Safety, said he saw the video and found it “disturbing.”
