Meet the African American Man Who is Changing How We See the World of Sport

Los Angeles, CA — Loyola Marymount University professor, Dr. Shaun M. Anderson, has been selected as a 2018 Black Enterprise magazine Modern Man of Distinction for his work that focuses on establishing Corporate Social Responsibility in sport. As an educator, scholar, speaker, and consultant, Dr. Anderson works tirelessly to utilize the platform of sport as an agent for social change.

“Sport has the ability to bridge communities, explore the boundaries of racism, and revitalize communities,” says Dr. Anderson. “But understanding how to utilize sport in this manner is often misunderstood. This is where my work comes into play.”

Like many of his peers, Dr. Anderson had dreams of becoming a professional athlete to escape poverty. But after his playing days were over, he had to make choices: succumb to the stereotypes of growing up in a single-parent home in a low-income neighborhood or work hard to achieve his aspirations another way. He chose the latter.

“I must admit, it was hard growing up”, Dr. Anderson said. “We didn’t have a lot of money. My mom was a janitor her entire life, often times working long hours to make ends meet. When I got older, I found myself working as a full-time janitor while being a full-time student to pay my way through college. After other obstacles such as evictions, repossessions, and some bouts of homelessness, I was finally able to pursue my doctorate degree. I am now able to intersect my love for sport with empowering people and communities”.

Dr. Anderson, along with other Modern Men of Distinction, will be honored at the 2018 Black Men Xcel Summit on August 29th – September 2nd at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

 

About Dr. Anderson:
Dr. Shaun M. Anderson is an Assistant Professor of Organizational Communication at Loyola Marymount University. His teaching, research, and consulting focuses on Corporate Social Responsibility in sport. He has worked with several organizations including Major League Baseball, the Anti-Defamation League, League of California Cities, and Football University. He received his Ph.D. (W.E.B. DuBois Fellow) in Communication Studies from West Virginia University. He received his M.S. in Mass Communication from Arkansas State University. Lastly, he received his B.A. in Mass Communication from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
