| San Francisco's Black History Celebration Focuses On Culinary Arts For Five Delicious Days

San Francisco, CA (BlackNews.com) -- This February, foodies and wine enthusiasts from all over the country will have a reason to come to San Francisco to escape the winter blues. From February 24 – February 28, sf|noir will host its Ninth Annual San Francisco Black History Month Celebration with a focus on the culinary arts for five delicious days of food, wine and entertainment to highlight the best in Black cuisine.
The sf|noir Wine and Food Event will feature renowned Bay Area chefs including David Lawrence of 1300 on Fillmore (San Francisco), Bryant Terry author of Vegan Soul Kitchen, Michael Law of the Front Porch (San Francisco, Chef Dean of Pican (Oakland) and Robert Dorsey III formerly of Blackberry Bistro (Oakland) who will kick off the celebration with The Shrimp & Grits Taste-off. Award winning poet and star of the original Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, Poetri, will host Thursday’s Spoken Word event “In Defense of Food: A Spoken Word Affair.” Friday, Bryant Terry will be at Marcus Books for a special meet and greet and Saturday’s Wine and Food Gala will feature samples of Caribbean, Creole, Southern, Soul Food, Cajun, African, and Vegan cuisine from the Bay Area’s top restaurants and chefs along with wine tastings from over 50 producers including several of the African-American vintners from Napa and Sonoma counties. The five day event will conclude on Sunday with the Oakland Jazz Brunch at selected restaurants in Oakland designed to highlight the culinary renaissance currently taking place in the East Area.

sf|noir Founder Herve Ernest states, “This event is truly one of the first in Northern California to celebrate African-American chefs and their cuisine as well as winemakers. Winemakers get a chance to showcase their wines in front of an audience they traditionally do not speak to and conversely, audiences get a chance to meet several of the African-American vintners, who sometimes get overlooked in the crowded field of wine producers. In addition, African-Americans, especially those who are foodies, now have another reason to visit San Francisco which is often referred to as the cuisine capital of the world.”
Since its inception in 2001, sf|noir has hosted events to create a greater awareness and increase the visibility of African-American “creatives” and their work. Saturday’s Wine and Food Gala will also celebrate and honor an artist or “torchbearer” with the Kuumba Award for Excellence in the Arts for their contributions to the San Francisco-Bay Area. Past recipients have included Ave Montague (Founder – San Francisco Black Film Festival) and Stanley E. Williams and Quentin Easter (Co-Founders - The Lorraine Hansberry Theater).
