Oakland, CA (BlackNews.com) - For Michael Smith, the deferment of his dream to attend the University of California at Berkeley will soon be worth the wait. With a decision to put his education on hold in exchange for raising a family, he is now preparing to be a student on the Big 10 campus in the Fall of 2010.
It was over seven years ago when Smith made the decision to put his family first and forego going to college. One decision that he did not regret. With life bringing its share of opportunities and challenges, Smith always knew that one day the door would open again for him to pursue his dream.
Smith, who is currently in the medical field, will attend UC Berkeley with the goal of obtaining a Bachelor's in Public Health. However, rising costs of tuition and fees are creating another challenge for Smith who is already working hard to ensure he can cover all of his educational costs.
With the encouragement of family and friends, Smith tapped into his experience as a model to create a 2010 calendar that is currently available across the country. The calendar showcases Smith in various locations across the Bay Area in California. Each picture was carefully shot to give supporters a look at Michael Smith: a father, model, successful professional and caring individual. Each calendar will sell for $15 with 10% of the proceeds to benefit the Women's Cancer Research Center's Sister to Sister program in Oakland.
Smith notes "This calendar is not just a way for me to obtain my degree but it will also allow me to use my talents to give back to others. My life has been touched by others who have lost loved ones to breast cancer so this is just another way I can support them."
Calendars are available online at www.coolpack6.com. Smith also plans to attend various events across the country to promote and sell the signature piece. "I hope others see more than just a model, but an ambitious and positive Black man who is simply trying to elevate himself higher by obtaining a college degree," states Smith.
