JFest 2008 Seeks Artists to Exhibit and Compete
Gainesville, FL (BlackNews.com) - The Cotton Club Museum and Cultural Center is currently seeking artists to participate in our 2nd Annual Juneteenth Festival & Juried Art Show (JFest2008). The event celebrates African cultural heritage with fine, and folk arts and an array of exciting performances on the grounds of Lincoln Park in Gainesville, Florida, June 14-15, 2008 (Father's Day weekend).
We are proud to announce this year's poster artist is Kenneth Moses Ogungbemi, a Nigerian artist who now resides in Brazil. His work mixes several different inspirations including Yoruba culture, folklore, and American jazz and blues. Having exhibited his work in countries like France, Portugal, and Bulgaria, Ogungbemi is truly an international artist whose artistic vision encapsulates JFest's vision. This year JFest2008 is participating in a local campaign to Explore Africa. By attending the festival participants can get their card stamped and qualify for a FREE GIFT. Please visit our website for more information, www.jfestcentral.com
Artists of all media are welcome, particularly those of African heritage or whose work deals with the African heritage experience. Artists may apply under the following categories: ceramics/pottery, fiber/textiles/leather, glass, drawing/graphics, painting, jewelry, sculpture, folk, art, photography, printmaking, wearable art, and mixed media. In addition to being able to exhibit and sell work, artists will compete in a juried art show with cash prizes totaling $10,000. Applications are available upon request 352-505-6161 or at JFestCentral.com and must be postmarked by March 31, 2008.
JFest 2008 commemorates Juneteenth, a celebration recalling the end of slavery in the U.S. This unique occasion glorifies independence, freedom, and family and has only recently been widely recognized, despite marking its 140th anniversary in 2005. This year's theme A Link in the Chain will honor the past by celebrating social responsibility and community togetherness. The festival will explore all facets of African heritage through visual arts, music, theater, dance, and storytelling. Highlights include performances by nationally-known musicians, youth art and talent show, and cultural competitions.
Apply now to take part in this momentous event! This will be an incredible opportunity for established and emerging artists alike to exhibit and sell their artwork to thousands of art lovers and collectors from Florida and around the country. Look forward to June as a month long celebration of African American culture.
