A Silent Growing Epidemic of Child Abuse
Bookcover |
Author - Ciara L. Anderson |
Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) - 80% of young adults who have been abused met the diagnostic criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder by the age of 21. Mental illness isn't a fad for young adults; it is true and real. Untimely deaths result from physical assault and/or severe neglect. Unfortunately, society isn't saddened about child abuse but they know it exists. Truth is, children are abused everyday all over America because society doesn't pay attention to the cycle. Reality is society thinks child abuse is something to lament, especially if it is not happening to them.
You are invited to take a journey where the innocence of youth meets the reality of life. Drowning in a Mother's Womb takes you deep into the recesses of a young girl's mind as she navigates her way through a life of turmoil that she was born into and left to manage practically alone. As the story opens, you will find the main character, Ciara, being evaluated as a psychiatrist seeks to understand what prompted her suicide attempt.
Ciara begins to recall what led her to try and end her life and narrates the reader through true tales of fear, pain, loss, abuse and neglect. Through her own adolescent recollection, you are taken through a maze of continuous disappointment from a mother who refuses to take accountability for her actions or adequately provide safety, comfort, basic needs and shelter for her children. This leads Ciara to often assume the role of caretaker and provider for her younger siblings, which includes holding down jobs at fast food restaurants long before she reached the legal age to acquire a work permit. You are taken captive immediately by Ciara's strength of character and sense of humor, yet you quickly realize these are coping mechanisms that she has acquired and as a result has forced her into a premature independence.
Drowning in a Mother's Womb approaches the story of a tumultuous childhood of a young girl in her own words, emotions and feelings. As she relives the horrific incidents of violent abuse, you will empathize with her every struggle and hang on her every word spoken in the language and culture of her experience. The most vital messages from her story are that regardless of the circumstances and situations that this young girl faced, having lived a most colorful life by the age of 13, she found herself drowning in her own resentment for a mother who never felt any remorse for her negligent parenting. Therefore, the girl continued to press toward her future, grasping at any and every place for help. When she least expected it, her broken spirit gave way to what felt like the walls of her mind closing in on her, and she found herself in the psychiatric ward of a local hospital. Ciara allows the reader to identify with a child's need to be nurtured and supported even when the nurturer remains absent and unsupportive.
Millions of children endure all types of abuse every day and many suffer in silence, Drowning in a Mother's Womb gives a voice to the silent -- to those who don't always have the physical signs of abuse but are suffering nevertheless. This story gives a firsthand account of a growing epidemic of children who are victimized and desperately seeking relief as well as redemption. Yet often have nowhere to turn and are often overlooked...until it is too late.

About the Author
Ciara L. Anderson has always admired and honored the fact that she was born on January 15, the same day as the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Though her birthday was never celebrated as a child, she remains proud of that connection.
As a Chicago native, Ciara lived in the Windy City and endured coldness from her parents all year round. Nevertheless, she managed to overcome insurmountable obstacles. She is currently completing her Master's in Professional Counseling while also working as a mental health counselor with underprivileged youth in her community.
As a survivor of child abuse and neglect, Ciara uses her personal experiences and professional knowledge to serve as a role model for youth. She reminds them that their potential does not have to be overshadowed by their circumstances. By sharing her story, she hopes to help similarly disadvantaged or abused children see that their obstacles can become hurdles.
Ciara is a dedicated mental health and social service provider, and she uses her personal and field experience to create powerful and vivid images in her publications. In the future, she intends to continue her positive outreach efforts with children. Specifically, she aims to help children in the foster care system by opening a group home. Ciara recognizes the importance of structure, support, and protective factors in healthy development. Her group home for youth will instill values to an often disregarded population.
Ciara own and operate her own publishing company, she self published her first book Drowning in a Mother's Womb. Ciara currently resides in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Now, she not only shares her birthday with Atlanta's King; she also shares his birthplace. Perhaps this was part of her destiny.
