Grammy Winning Producer Donald Lawrence Tapped to Produce New Gospel Version of "I Wanna Thank You" for the Forthcoming CD

"I Wanna Thank You...An All-Star Tribute to Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly"

Donald Lawrence

Washington, DC (BlackNews.com) - Grammy-Winning producer Donald Lawrence has been tapped to produce a gospel rendition of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly's classic slow jam, "I Wanna Thank You" for the Brantera Music Group's forthcoming CD I Wanna Thank You...An All-Star Tribute to Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly.

Originally released on Maze's 1983 We Are One LP, the inspirational love song reached #59 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart the following year. The song has become a staple of Maze's concerts and a fan favorite. Lawrence is currently debating which gospel artist(s) to have record the song.

In the meantime, the project is a reunion of sorts for Lawrence and Frankie Beverly's son, Anthony, who conceived the project to celebrate the career of his legendary father. "Anthony used to play drums for Christopher Williams [R&B artist known for songs such as "Talking to Myself" and "I'm Dreaming"] when I was music director for Stephanie Mills," he recalls. "We toured extensively together. At the time, Stephanie and Christopher were both managed by Cassandra Mills, so we did a lot of shows together. I look forward to working with Anthony again."

Lawrence is one of the key figures in modern gospel music. He produced four out of the Top 5 songs on Billboard magazine's 2007 Year-End Hot Gospel Songs chart, including his own "The Blessing of Abraham" which spent 18 weeks at #1 on the R&R Hot Gospel songs chart. Since retiring from the Tri-City Singers in 2007 after 16 years as their leader, Lawrence has begun to do more solo work. This coming fall, he will return as host of Verizon Wireless' "How Sweet the Sound" national choir competition. He is currently riding the radio waves with his #3 smash hit "Back II Eden" and Hezekiah Walker's #1 hit "Souled Out" that was produced by Lawrence.
