New York, NY (BlackNews.com) - Much like the Nazi Regime in Germany, one out of every 100 prison inmates were wrongly convicted during the 8 years of George W. Bush's presidency, according to the latest statistics from the Innocence Project. Acclaimed writer/director Shawn Baker is well aware of this horrifying fact, having grown up on the mean streets of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn during the Republican regime prior to Barack Obama's takeover.
"A couple of my running buddies who are in prison are completely innocent," said Baker, who just happens to be a well-respected film director with the power to address the issue, which he has done in his latest film Conspiracy X.
A Spike Lee protégée, Baker cut his teeth as a production assistant at 40 Acres and a Mule, working with Monty Ross, producer of Lee's first film She's Gotta Have It.
"Like Spike's early films, my goal as a film director is to raise the awareness in young Americans and even build interest globally about the havoc conspiracy and wrongful imprisonment is wreaking on minorities and their families. The injustice of conspiracy and wrongful imprisonment under 8 years of Bush will impact generations to come," said Baker.
Shot in HD on the streets of Brooklyn, Conspiracy X will give an in-depth examination of the judicial system, while blending compelling dramatizations along with captivating and thought-provoking footage, concurrently revealing interviews from real victims, prosecutors and high-profile political figures, such as Al Sharpton, Charlie Rangel and Hillary Clinton. "It's intriguing to me how you can be convicted of a crime or crimes, in which you allegedly intended to commit even with a person or person(s) you haven't even met or came in contact with...Conspiracy X reveals the truth in detail with cold-hard facts," said Shawn Baker, taking a break from post production on the film in his Manhattan office in the arts district of Tribeca.
Under the banner of his production company Lock City Films and Freelance Entertainment, consciousness raising is what Baker is known for. His last film The Eddie Black Story was acquired by Polychrome Pictures/Universal for broadcast and is based on a true story about a notorious Brooklyn street gang that terrorized New York City high schools and urban communities for nearly a decade in the 1990s. "Our films stand on their own merit to educate, entertain, enlighten and produce revenue so that future social awareness project can be funded," says Mr. Baker.
Conspiracy X is executive produced by Timothy "Lance" Pretty and produced by Mick Reed of Clawtown fame. It stars Kellita Smith (Bernie Mac Show), Al Thompson (Love Don't Cost A Thing), R&B Songstress/Actress Olivia Longott, Juliette Farley (M.O.N.Y) and Tyson Hall (Kiss of Chaos). Although in 2010 Baker is set to direct the blazing gangster pic Snoopafly (a.k.a Born Hustler), starring West Coast Rapper King Snoop Dogg, he is refraining from commenting. "That's in development and I legally can't make an announcement about it yet," said Baker.
