Sponsored by the Open Society Foundations Campaign for Black Male Achievement, the forum will elevate the discussion of black males' engagement in schools by focusing on meaningful solutions for teachers and teacher educators featured in the CBCF report, "Breaking Barriers 2: Plotting the Path Away from Juvenile Detention and Toward Academic Success for School-age African American Males" by Dr. Ivory A. Toldson. The 88-page research report focuses on the roles schools and communities can play in reducing the disproportionate contact that Black males have with the juvenile justice system.
"Nationwide, nearly 60% of black males report being suspended or expelled from school," explains Toldson. "Research shows that when teachers are more culturally aware, schools can reduce suspensions, eliminate gang violence and school crime, and elevate academic success among black males."
The meeting will also feature a screening and discussion of the film "Beyond the Bricks" and a preview of Journal of Negro Education special issue "Teacher Education and the Black Community: Preparing Teachers to Teach Black Students, Preparing Black Students to Become Teachers." A networking reception featuring national scholars and community leaders who have researched programs that advance our knowledge about ways to improve academic success among black males will follow.
