Black Pastor Criticized (and Praised) After Buying His Wife a $200K Lamborghini

Greenville, SC — Pastor John Gray of Relentless Church has gained a lot of national attention after he recently publicized the anniversary gift he gave to his wife, a brand new Lamborghini car reportedly worth over $200,000. He has received some praises and many criticisms, which compelled his wife to defend him on social media..

In a now-deleted viral video posted on Instagram, Gray can be seen showing her wife, Aventer Gray, his gift during their 8th wedding anniversary celebration. Aventer was surprised when she saw the Lamborghini Urus, an SUV that starts at about $200,000, according to various car magazines.

Even though there were some who commended him for his gift, many have raised their eyebrows and criticized the pastor. Some pointed out how he could indulge when his “flock” could never be able to buy such pricey things. Some were even saying he is untrustworthy while implying that he bought the car using the money from “gullible followers.” There were still others, however, who believe that he should be able to rightfully spend his own hard-earned money on whatever he wants.

Amidst the controversies, his wife was quick to come to his defense and posted a picture of them on Instagram on Sunday. On the caption, she specified his husband’s business ventures that include book deals, silent endorsements, movie and TV productions, among others.

“I don’t see anyone screaming about how basketball players drive what they do while you paying $$$ to see them play in arenas and on fields. We don’t live for people! We live for God!” she wrote.

Moreover, Gray defended himself in a Facebook Live video on Thursday.

“It wasn’t a pastor that bought the car — it was a husband that bought the car. Get that in your spirit,” Gray said. “I’m a husband first. Don’t confuse what I do with who I am. What I do is I pastor God’s people. Who I am is a husband and a father, and I’ll do anything to honor them.”

He also made it clear that he did not spend the funds intended for church use.

“The answer is no. Absolutely not. And, God, take my life on this live feed if I did,” he said. “I have been patient my whole life for this moment. I’m 45. I’m supposed to wait till I’m 70 to live my best life? And my best life is seeing my wife happy.”

In addition, he noted that he had only put a deposit down on the luxury car, but hasn’t paid it off in full yet.
