Nationwide — Mark Lowery is used to seeing his name in print.
As an award-winning journalist with more than 25 years of experience, Lowery’s byline has appeared in major newspapers such as the Detroit Free Press, New York Newsday, and the Plain Dealer. And he’s been an editor at magazines such as Black Enterprise and DiversityInc.
But the release of He PromisD Nvr 2 Leav Me – Lowery’s debut novel on Lion’s Roar Press (LRP) – takes him into new territory. LRP is a new, Cleveland, OH.-area independent press with the stated goal of “publishing works across various platforms, highlighting often-overlooked voices and perspectives.”
He PromisD Nvr 2 Leav Me tells the story of Taran Johnson, a writer whose serene and opulent New York City lifestyle is derailed when he tries to honor a pledge made years earlier. It is LRP’s inaugural product.
During a recent interview, Lowery talked about the novel and his writing inspirations. Here’s what he had to say:
What were your writing inspirations?
As far as fiction goes, the two works that inspired me the most were Ralph Ellison’sInvisible Man and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple. In Ellison’s Invisible Man, I saw characters that looked and sounded like me. And that really generated my interest in reading. And Walker’s The Color Purple showed me the power of the written word to spotlight problems.
Have you always written?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve written in one form or another. That naturally took me into a career in journalism. But this, writing novels, has always been my goal. I hope after people read He PromisD Nvr 2 Leav Me that they don’t advise me to keep my day job!
Why do you use text-message form in the book’s title and in many chapter introductions?
It’s a clever way to get into some of the chapters and, logically, it made sense relative to the story. And, of course, as a writer you are always searching for some device or technique to attract that younger audience.
In a nutshell, what is this novel about?
It’s two stories in one that play out simultaneously. The first is about the predicament that the main character finds himself in, and how his life unravels as he tries to help someone else. It could be subtitled “No Good Deed…” The second part deals with our struggle to reconcile our past, present, and future. Will we learn from the past and move on, or will it hold us hostage?
