Stone Mountain, GA (BlackNews.com) - In this season of family reunions AABoomers.com, the online magazine for the savvy African-American Baby Boomer, is pleased to highlight African-American Family Reunions and Genealogy in its July issue. In the ensuing 31 years since the Roots phenomenon swept America, African-American family reunions have grown from small picnics to full-fledged extravaganzas, often with banquets, historical plays, family scholarship programs and investment clubs.
These reunions, often courted by area Convention and Visitors' Bureaus are increasingly well-organized and generate a great deal of revenue for the areas where they are held, says Lois-Ann Clark, the publisher of AABoomers.com. "The Roots phenomenon has really created a cottage industry which we are pleased to highlight," says Clark. "Our July issue not only features successful family reunions, but we also give information on how to plan reunions--including providing a health component at your reunion and how to start family investment clubs."
In keeping with the Roots theme, this issue also offers an article on genealogy for those interested in tracing their own roots. We give the reader a mini-primer or "how-to guide' on how to get started.
"We are especially pleased to present an article on the Still family," says Clark. "This unique African-American family can trace its roots back to the 1630s, something few whites and even fewer Blacks can do." Ms. Clark also adds that "(t)he chronology of this family should be a part of recorded history and appear in the history books."
AABoomers.com is also very pleased to join the National Black Arts Festival in celebrating its 20th anniversary. The NBAF will be taking place in AABoomers.com's hometown of Atlanta from July 18 to July 28, 2008, and will feature a stellar lineup of guests including Dr. Cornel West; Judith Jamison, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; actors Angela Bassett and Charles S. Dutton; author-playwright Pearl Cleage; Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker; legendary jazz musician and bandleader Wynton Marsalis, who will be debuting his first orchestral work in a performance with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; and Grammy Award-winning singer Gladys Knight. Who knows when a lineup like this will be together again for one event?
