Tampa, FL — Mamie Walker, an 84-year old grandmother from Tampa, Florida, has not been receiving her monthly social security check — her only source of funds. The government claims she owes them hundreds of thousands for her college education. What’s shocking is that she says that she never even attended college!

According to reports, the government has not sent Walker her monthly $1,498 check for both February and March. The U.S. Treasury Department has instead sent her a letter claiming she has been reported for “collection action” as she owed them $224,414.50.

She was initially told that 15 percent of each of her checks will be withheld to pay the debt. But she received another letter that she won’t be receiving any check anymore until September 2031.

“I’ll probably be dead by then,” Walker told WFLA. “I’m so scared. I don’t sleep at night because I’m so scared next week… my lights are going to be off.”

Walker, who was the family’s breadwinner ever since her childhood, hasn’t only never went to college but she didn’t even learn how to read nor write.

Her son, Morrison Walker, tried to help his mother contacting the social security but no one answered the phone. Even when he went to the local office, nobody was able to assist him.

“I work and I try my best to help her with her bills, but now this done happened and I have my own bills, and she don’t have no income and now they’re trying to put eviction on her house, her water bill skyrocketed, her lights are going to get cut off,” Walker said.
